The Racqueteers v Newport Inn: 28/7/21
It seemed only fitting that our esteemed President’s 60th birthday should fall on the day of our trip to the picturesque and deeply rural Braishfield ground.
The weather was mixed with heavy downpours all around the rolling Hampshire countryside, though our (and the welcoming oppositions’) enthusiasm to play the game was not diminished.
We batted first and though delayed by a heavy but fast-moving shower after 2 overs, we were soon back playing the 20 overs-a-side match.
The President and Kendall, opening the batting, both got retired with 27 & 25 respectively building an excellent foundation on (an obviously) damp wicket and slow outfield.
Despite losing Richard C and the Professor (8), skipper Mike F (23 not out), well supported by
Richard S (11), saw us post a competitive 109 for 2 off our allocated overs.
Taking to the field we bowled well from the off as the returning Charlie T, 1 for only 7 off his 4 overs and Edmund with 2 good wickets for only 10 off three excellent overs, and our control was assured.
Chris continued the impressive attack bowling with great accuracy to take 3 for 13 with another wicket falling to the ever-pacy Rishi… but as the light drew in, the encircling showers – accompanied by an array of beautiful rainbows – finally saw us reluctantly having to abandon the game in pouring rain with Newport Inn on the ropes at 52 for 7 after 16 overs.
All in all though, the bucolic setting, friendly opposition and the celebration of Mike C’s birthday made for a memorable evening as, in the fading light, we all enjoyed a drink and a terrific barbeque wonderfully orchestrated by the Professor.
We move on to another wonderful ground as we travel into Sussex for our annual, and much-anticipated, trip to Goodwood next Thursday.
I hope that captures the evening chaps,
M
