The Racqueteers v The Rioteers: 11/7/21
After assembling at River Park, on a day of significant sporting contests (Wimbledon & Euro football finals), we won the toss and batted first in a 25 over match versus the affable Rioteers.
The outfield was rather long and the track soft – though the latter had decent bounce – as we set about building a decent total in the 10-a-side game under overcast skies.
Despite losing the President early to a superb slip catch, skipper Mike F (29) and G (22) built a good base before some great stroke-play from debutant Rishi (21), Richard S (10) and the flamboyant Harry T (32), saw us post a decent 133 in our 25 overs.
Our defence started very well with new Racqueteer, Rishi, bowling with pace and purpose and claiming three Rioteers wickets for only 16 runs in his 4 over spell. Mike C was even more frugal conceding only 9 runs in his 4 overs!
The Rioteers never gave up the chase though, and despite a great spell of controlled leg spin from another most welcome debutant, Richard Yoxall (1 for 21 in his 4 overs), and a focussed & fiery spell from Harry T (2 for 16), they edged home as the heavens opened, with 10 balls to spare.
It was a tight game which we were disappointed not to win… though we all did well to complete it in the pouring rain.
We now look forward to a sunny evening on Thursday as we travel to the beautiful Brockwood Park ground for our game v The White Hunters.
