The Racqueteers v Broken Wanderers: Sunday, 19th June, 2022

Our first ever game against this friendly and enthusiastic wandering team took place on a decent and dry Sunday afternoon at River Park. Losing the toss, we found ourselves in the field for a 35 overs-a-side contest on a surprisingly good track.
Our opposition batted carefully and with tenacity despite the early loss of an opener to the ever-lively Rishi, but never really got into full flow; boundaries were scarce on the huge outfield and we bowled really well as a team aided by the ubiquitous Sepia snaffling great catches with ease!
Despite an annoying foot injury, the President took 2 good wickets accompanied by Tom T’s accurate pace (taking 3 for 12) and the Skipper’s canny spin claiming 3 for 11. Add a wicket for Head of Salmon and the job was done: Broken Wanderers bowled out for 91!
In reply, a watchful start by The Bard and Sepia saw us always in touch with the run rate though the latter fell for 6 to a rather dubious lbw… Joining James at the crease, skipper Mike F continued the careful yet purposeful progress towards the total; both batsmen finding their timing, touch & boundaries as some ominous-looking clouds gathered over the ground. Sadly, The Bard fell 6 short of his maiden Racqueteers half-century but with the Skipper (30 not out) in the mood to see it through, the winning total was reached in good time with overs to spare.
Well played Racqueteers – we beat the rain and made our way back to the welcoming King Alf with an opposition we look forward to seeing again next year.
